Big difference. Facebook is primarily used for the purposes of staying in touch with existing connections rather than building new connections. While Facebook allows for creating private groups, our studies have shown that users are less likely to interact and add a neighbor that they have or have not met to their personal space on Facebook. Hapitat allows residents to share what they feel comfortable without needing to invite others into one's personal space. Additionally, Hapitat's kudos and badge system encourages and eases interaction between neighbors within the residential community, which is a feature that is not available on Facebook.
There is quite the difference. Next door's main cause is the "community". Hapitat's main cause is "enabling new neighborly connections". While neighborly connections might contribute to a better community, Hapitat is meant to be used for whatever the resident need is. Sometimes, the need is simply knowing who one lives around. The radius of the community within Hapitat is much smaller and exclusive to one's residential community, which is the thing that all users definitely have in common. Additionally, property managers are able to use hapitat to communicate to residents as well as get more control over their communities. Last but not least, Hapitat's kudos and badge system encourages and eases interaction within the residential community, which is a feature that is not available on Next Door. And for the record, we do not like sponsored ads, those get in the way of the user's interactions, and are pretty annoying :)
Hapitat allows residents to share whatever they feel comfortable in sharing. The app does not force anyone to share their real name, picture or unit number. In fact, residents might choose to be off the grid and utilize 1:1 interactions using private messaging. Hapitat is what you make out of it, and does not impose interactions with the entire community.
On several occasions, we have noticed that residents are more likely to be courteous and cautious with their complaints when they voice their opinions in front of their neighbors. While complaining through hapitat seems to be an edge case, a healthier discussion usually arises digitally leading to more of a self-managed and collaborative community that solves its own problems on its own.
